THE Wa Municipal Assembly in the Upper West Region has finally confirmed Mr Abdul Aziz Mohammed as the Wa Municipal Chief Executive (MCE).
He polled 19 votes as against six to obtain the required two-thirds of the total votes.
The confirmation of Mr Mohammed came on the heels of the revocation of the appointment of four government appointees on the day of confirmation.
They are Hafiz Bin Salih, Amamata Mumuni, Alhaji Umar Idrisu Jingo and Priscilla Ang-leuha.
The “gang of four” was quickly replaced by Jamila Issa, Daudu Osman, Abubakar Mujeeb-Rahman and Abdulhak Jamal, who were immediately sworn in before the ballot took place.
The action was apparently necessitated by the conduct of some members of the assembly in the previous election, which was held about a week ago when they failed to endorse Mr Mohammed as the MCE.
In a speech after his confirmation, the newly elected MCE, thanked the assembly for the confidence reposed in him.
He called on the assembly members to work in unison to move the assembly forward.
For his part, the Presiding Member of the assembly, Mr Iddrisu Adams, called for unity among members of the assembly.
In a related development, the Wa East District Assembly also failed to endorse the President’s nominee, Mr Isaac B. Alitu, as the new district chief executive (DCE).
He polled 13 out of the 23 votes cast and could, therefore, not raise the two-thirds of the total votes required of him to be confirmed.
Mr Alitu, however, has a second chance since he got more than 50 per cent of the votes cast.
This, according to the Electoral Officer, Mr Mahama Yahaya, must be within the next 10 days.
The Upper West Regional Minister, Mr George Hickah Benson, in an address, described the action of the assembly members as an “unfulfilled success”.
He said there were 138 districts across the country, of which the Wa East was only one out of the lot.
“You must, therefore, think about the development needs of the women and children in this district and desist from listening to people who did not have the interest of the district at heart,” the minister cautioned.
The nominee, Mr Alitu, expressed appreciation to the members and appealed to them to rescind their decision for the better, during the next meeting.
