ALHASSAN TO CONTEST ONDFP TICKET ... Page 17

Story: George Folley Quaye, Wa

A 31-year-old Wa-based businessman, Illiasu Alhassan, has declared his intention to contest on the ticket of the Democratic Freedom Party (DFP) as its parliamentary candidate for Wa Central.
He observed that after a careful study of the political terrain, he had no option but to join the DFP since it was the party of the future.
"The New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) have all failed us; DFP holds the key to the future development of Ghana," he added.
Mr Alhassan, who described himself as a dye in the wool DFP supporter, was of the view that the race for Wa Central would be a foregone conclusion for DFP
"I have tested the waters and the people are clamouring for change and the best person to bring this change is Illiasu," he confidently told the Daily Graphic
Touching on his vision, he promised to concentrate on the education of the young ones since they were the future leaders of the country.
He promised to operate an open-door policy where each and everyone would be made to participate in the decision making process.
Mr Alhassan commended the leadership of the DFP for their achievement so far and urged them to work harder to ensure victory for the party next year.

2007 National Best Farmers Award ....AKATI TOPS 'EM ALL

Story: George Folley & Chris Nunoo, Wa

A 54-YEAR-OLD man who has been farming at Manhyia in the Ashanti Region for many years now made a triumphant return to his native Wa yesterday when he was crowned the National Best Farmer for 2007.
Alhaji Abdul Salaam Akati’s return to his home town was, indeed, a proud one as he was picked way ahead of the pack of 62 awardees and crowned the overall best at the 23rd National Farmers Day.
To the cheers of the home crowd and many who had trooped to the venue from far and near, Alhaji Akati received a symbolic key to a furnished three-bedroom house to be sponsored by the Agricultural Development Bank (ADB).
Alhaji Akati, who is the Managing Director of Akati Farms, has 5,830 acres of farmland, out of which he has put 216 acres under cultivation.
He employs 295 full-time workers and 50 casuals.
The Second National Best Farmer award went to 46-year-old Dominic Kwame Ampofo of the Western Region. He took home a double-cabin pick-up donated by Stanbic Bank as his prize.
Daniel Ayensu Kumi of the Greater-Accra Region had a tractor for placing third.
Kow Osafo Otu emerged the National Best Fisherman and was presented with a double-cabin pick-up.
Other award winners included Ambrose Owusu of the Central Region, who was adjudged the Best in Fish Farming, Stephen Owusu of the Brong Ahafo Region was also adjudged the Best in Poultry Farming, while the Best Physically-Challenged Farmer award went to Thomas Zubille of the Upper West Region.
The Assorku-Essaman M/A JHS and Sekondi College in the Western Region were also presented with special awards.
Also awarded were 10 agricultural extension agents.
In all, 62 farmers were awarded at the colourful ceremony held at the picturesque Jubilee Park.
In attendance to provide music was the Police Band from the Pwalugu Police Training School in the Upper East Region. They treated the crowd to some melodious tunes, with some singing along and occasionally tapping their feet.

OSAFO-MAAFO PREDICTS ONETOUCH VICTORY (Page 13)

Story: George Folley Quaye, Wa

A PRESIDENTIAL aspirant of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr Yaw Osafo-Maafo, has predicted an outright victory in his favour at the party's national delegates congress scheduled for December 22, 2007.
"I expect to win in the first round because records in the NPP show that there is nothing like second round, it is either Osafo-Maafo or Mr X and therefore expect a ‘onetouch’ victory," he added.
Speaking to the media in Wa after a tour of the Upper West Region, he recalled that in 1992, 1996 and 1998 all the candidates who won the party's primaries were elected in the first round.
Mr Osafo-Maafo said people in the NPP normally knew whom to vote for and at those congresses the first two candidates took about 85 per cent of the votes with the rest of the candidates following with marginal votes.
He described the recent opinion polls on other NPP presidential aspirants as unreliable as delegates to the December congress had currently not been selected and that the real opinion polls would be in December 22, 2007.
He announced that in an unlikely event of defeat at the congress, he would not create any problem for the party and would therefore support the winner.
Mr Osafo-Maafo, however, cautioned that the election must be free and fair so as not to create any discontent.
On his vision for the country, the NPP presidential aspirant said Ghana would be made the Mecca of English-speaking West Africa.
"I will also promote the production of salt for export to enable us to earn more foreign exchange," he stated.
He expressed regret that the three northern regions were a difficult terrain for the NPP, which did not make the party comfortable, and expressed the hope that he would support any effort aimed at determining the executives in the orphaned constituencies to change the trend.
Touching on the state of roads in the northern parts of the country, Mr Osafo-Maafo gave the assurance that under his presidency they would be given the necessary attention.
